A Comparison between Kinetic and Agile

Most Agile Firms Malpractice Agile

    • Agile is imposed from without.
    • It impedes rather than accelerates software development.
    • It attempts structural change.

Kinetic preserves Agile principles and practices.

    • It guides and enhances natural development processes.
    • It accelerates software development.
    • It integrates with existing structures.

Why Kinetic

Product in Action

Origins

Agile has become an industry buzzword. There are many firms that advertise their version of Agile and provide tutorials, advice and instructions on how an organization should become Agile. A great deal of time is spent trying to shoehorn Agile into an organizational structure that is rigid and Agile resistant. The result is something that is neither Agile nor waterfall nor any other methodology that helps the organization. By using this approach the organization arrives at something that is neither one thing nor anther. In many cases this makes things worse than before.

Another issue is the formalization of the Agile approach into frameworks and practices that attempt to regulate organizational behaviors from outside. Organizations enforce these rules almost without regard for how existing processes work, or how they can migrate to Agile. These rules and frameworks often stifle the development lifecycle making it harder to develop product than it was before. This is the exact opposite of what Agile is intended to do.

Our Approach

Kinetic does not approach an organization with the intent to govern it with an external body of rules and regulations that “manage” the software development lifecycle. Instead Kinetic aims to release the blocks that prevent an organization from realizing its potential. Kinetic uses the natural processes that occur in a development environment and guides them to be more robust adaptive and productive. It streamlines the software lifecycle so that it becomes highly optimized and robust. In effect Kinetic recommends a suite of principles and practices that empower organizations from within.

Some may argue that if the principles in Kinetic are born from Agile aren’t we simply putting old wine into a new bottle? This argument falls short when you examine Kinetic more closely. It is not a collection of user stories running in units tests. It is an integrated approach to the entire software development lifecycle, integrated with an on premise cloud that provides a more natural way to develop test and deploy software product.

Frameworks and Architecture

Kinetic is not another Agile framework like Scrum. A development team can use Scrum while following Kinetic methodologies. In fact you can use any Agile framework within Kinetic or use no Agile framework and Kinetic will still provide an Agile Environment for the organization.

Kinetic decomposes architectures and user stories and then uses upfront integration and iterative development to build out each user story. From design to deployment, the entire software lifecycle is test driven. Everything from system design to data models is born and grows in a test environment. In this sense Kinetic may also be called an integrated test driven lifecycle (TDLC).

CI / CD

Another key difference is that CI/CD pipeline may or may not exist as part of a build process. Continuous integration and continuous delivery is a natural part of Kinetics development lifecycle. Each step of the product lifecycle is continuously integrated and continuously deployed as a natural part of its development.  Any member of an organization at any time can interact with the product if they choose to do so. In other words the product or any part of it is always live and is always being continually developed, continually integrated and continually deployed.

Results

The results of using Kinetic are often startling to an organization. The reduction in overhead and the absence of noise in the process together with the subsequent increase in productivity, often surprises the organization. Additionally the quality of the product and the velocity at which features are developed provoke disbelief in those outside the development process. Gone are the myriad tickets, the extensive reporting, constant status reports and all the other ritualistic practices surrounding software development. Instead it is replaced with a low noise, high yield methodology that develops software in a highly optimized timeframe. Some of the key facets of Kinetic are provided below.

Facet

Visibility – Direct experience of the product throughout its lifecycle.

Liveness – Keeping the product in a Live and running state at all times throughout its lifecycle.

Integration – all software artifacts are built in an integrated environment.

Quality – Product functioning that exhibits facets like responsivity, availability, adaptive, fault tolerant, robust.

Current

  • The code is enclosed by an opaque structure almost like cloud cover.
  • Other than those with hands on experience there is no visibility into the software product by others in the company.
  • Most code in an organization is hidden in development and in SCM systems like Git. It is not live.
  • Most individuals in an organization do not interact with the product as it is being developed.
  • The integration phase is where all the separate pieces are put together and tested.
  • Naturally this is where the most time consuming issues arise.

Quality assurance is inferred from:

  • Unit test
  • System test
  • Code coverage
  • Other metrics

Kinetic

  • Removes the opaque enclosure surrounding the product.
  • Makes the software product visible at all times to all members of the organization.
  • The software product is always running.
  • Dramatically improves product awareness.
  • Improves product availability.
  • Creates an integrated environment that cuts across all departments.
  • It reduces software variances in development, system test or deployment.
  • It reduces inter-departmental friction.

Kinetic uses all of the usual QA practices but adds the following:

  • Performance testing
  • Ad hoc testing
  • Live testing by all users in the organization
  • Traffic bursts
